Neon Pair
Description
The Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii), a popular livebearing fish from the Poeciliidae family, is native to Central America, including Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala. Known for its elongated lower tail fin “sword” in males, this species exhibits vibrant body colors ranging from red, green, orange, to metallic shades, making it a favorite for community and display tanks. Swordtails thrive in water temperatures of 22–28°C, with a pH range of 7.0–8.0 and moderate hardness, and are omnivorous, readily accepting high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and occasional live foods like brine shrimp or daphnia. They are hardy and easy to care for, suitable for beginners, though males can display mild territorial behavior. Adults reach a maximum size of 12–14 cm (4.5–5.5 inches), with males slightly smaller than females, and have a lifespan of 3–5 years. Swordtails are livebearers, giving birth to free-swimming fry after internal fertilization, with sexual maturity usually reached at 4–6 months. A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended, with plenty of plants for hiding fry and open swimming space. Males are distinguished by the long lower tail fin “sword” and slimmer body, while females are larger with a rounder belly. We offer 2-inch, 5-month old healthy Swordtails, ideal for community tanks, breeding, or hobbyists, with vibrant coloration and active behavior.
