Description

The Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), a graceful and iconic freshwater cichlid from the Cichlidae family, originates from the slow-moving rivers and flooded forests of the Amazon Basin in South America. Renowned for its tall, laterally compressed body and long flowing fins, Angelfish are available in a wide range of colors and patterns, making them a centerpiece fish in planted and display aquariums. They thrive in water temperatures of 24–30°C, with a pH range of 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. Angelfish are omnivorous, readily accepting high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. This species is hardy with an easy to moderate care level, suitable for both intermediate hobbyists and serious breeders. Temperament is generally peaceful, though they may become territorial during breeding and may prey on very small fish. Adults reach a maximum size of 12–15 cm (5–6 inches) in body length, with a total height of up to 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) including fins, and have a lifespan of 8–10 years with proper care. Angelfish are substrate spawners, laying eggs on vertical surfaces such as leaves, slate, or aquarium glass, with both parents providing attentive care. A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended, with tall aquariums, gentle filtration, and plenty of vertical décor and plants. Compatible tank mates include peaceful medium-sized fish such as Corydoras, larger tetras, and peaceful gouramis. Males and females are difficult to distinguish outside breeding condition, with reliable sexing usually possible only when mature and paired. Breeding age is typically 8–12 months, depending on growth and conditions.
